The Arab League is proposing a new Security Council resolution on Syria which would urge both sides in the Syrian conflict to hold fire and tell the Syrian government that it must respects human rights.

Secretary General Nabil al-Araby spoke about this at the ‘Friends of Syria’ international conference in Tunis on Friday. He said that the Syrian crisis must be settled through political means, and that both sides should play part in the settlement process.

Russia and China had twice vetoed Security Council resolutions which threatened imposing sanctions on Syria. Russia says it is determined to avert a situation in which a Security Council resolution is used for justifying outside intervention in Syria and turning that country into another Libya.

According to Al-Arabiya, hundreds of angry supporters of Syrian President Bashar Assad have been besieging the Tunis hotel where representatives from several dozen nations – which do not include Russia, China or Syria – are mulling proposals to grant formal recognition to the National Council of the Syrian opposition and probably also supply arms to its military wing.

Al-Arabiya says it believes the Syrian rebels are already receiving arms and equipment from the ‘Friends of Syria’.
