French journalists evacuated from Syria

Friday, March 2, 2012

French President Nicolas Sarkozy says 2 French journalists have been evacuated from Syria to neighboring Lebanon.

Sarkozy made the announcement on Thursday in Brussels.

Edith Bouvier, a reporter for the newspaper Le Figaro, sustained a leg injury in a Syrian government artillery attack last month in the city of Homs.

Bouvier posted a video message on YouTube with the help of anti-government forces, asking for help.

The French government tried to rescue her and a magazine cameraman, but the fierce fighting in the besieged city blocked the effort.

Sarkozy said the 2 journalists are now safely in Lebanese territory and will shortly be under the protection of the French embassy in Beirut.

The French president did not disclose how they were rescued. But he said he had talked with Bouvier on the phone, and she seemed relieved.

The two are expected to return to France as early as Friday.
