Syria – Red Cross officials to arrive in Homs

Friday, March 2, 2012

International Red Cross officials are due to arrive in the Syrian city Homs now that the government troops have driven rebel fighters away from the city.

The Red Cross delegation will provide assistance for the local population, will bring along medicines and foodstuffs, and will visit the Baba Amr neighbourhood, where two foreign reporters, – Mary Colvin of the United States, and Remi Ochlik of France, died in a mortar attack last week.

On Thursday, the Syrian authorities allowed the International Red Cross and the Red Crescent national community to supply humanitarian aid to Homs and evacuate those wounded from the city. The city was the scene of bitter fighting between government troops and armed opposition units in recent days.
