Lavrov: Syria unrest must end ‘irrespective’ of origin

Saturday, March 10, 2012

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at talks with Arab counterparts in Cairo that violence in Syria must end, “irrespective” of its origin, while Qatar said a ceasefire was not enough.

“Today the most urgent is to end all violence irrespective of where it came from,” Lavrov told the meeting, adding that the government and armed groups should withdraw from cities and towns.

But Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim Al-Thani, Qatar’s foreign minister, said the killings of civilians in Syria amounted to “genocide” and that a ceasefire was “not enough.”
