Kofi Annan stays in contact with Syrian government

Thursday, March 15, 2012

Special envoy of the UN and the League of Arab States Kofi Annan is still in contact with the Syrian government over his proposals aimed at stopping the bloodshed in the country, his press-secretary told journalists in Geneva on Thursday.

“The door for a dialogue remains open,” he said.

Last week Kofi Annan visited Syria, where he had talks with President Bashar al-Assad. Annan is expected to report the results of his trip to the UN Security Council on Friday.

On Wednesday Kofi Annan said that he had received a response from Damascus to his proposals on the settlement of the Syrian crisis. Damascus has confirmed its ‘positive response’ to Annan’s proposals.
