A demonstration in support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his programme of reforms has taken place in Damascus with the participation of thousands of people.

The participants in the action were holding national flags of Syria, Russia and China. Mass meetings were also held in other large Syrian cities.

The Surya TV station points out that ‘the Syrian people sent a message to the world that they wanted to live a free and peaceful life and rejected all interference and diktat.” Observers consider this action to be the authorities’ response to the Syrian opposition which on Thursday marks a year since the beginning of the anti-government protests

Over 8,000 people have become victims of the violence initiated by Islamists. The government reacted to terrorist acts, mutinies and plunders with tough measures and anti-riot operations.

The referendum on the new draft Constitution which took place on the 26th of February showed that over half of the population supported the ‘course of building a new Syria’ proclaimed by Bashar al-Assad.
