Russia backs Annan’s Syrian mission

Monday, March 26, 2012

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov calls on the world community to support the mission of the UN envoy to Syria Kofi Annan. Mr. Lavrov said this after meeting with Mr. Annan in Moscow.

Russia’s position on Syria remains the same – there is no other way to achieve peace there than for the conflicting sides to lay down arms and start negotiations.

No one from abroad should take sides in the Syrian conflict, Russia believes.

Mr. Lavrov asked Mr. Annan to negotiate both with the Syrian government and with the opposition.

Before flying to Syria, Kofi Annan met with Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev, who promised that he would fully support Mr. Annan’s mission in Syria.
