Malian parties reject talks with the junta

Wednesday, April 4, 2012

A coalition of 50 Malian parties and civil society groups has rejected the junta’s offer of talks about a handover of power to a civilian administration.

The military seized power in a coup on March 22th, accusing President Amadou Tumani Toure of failing to deal with a Tuareg insurgency in northern Mali. The rebel Tuaregs took advantage of the chaos in the wake of the coup to seize three important northern towns.
