Storm warning for northern Japan

Wednesday, April 4, 2012

Gusty winds blew across northern Japan Wednesday, fueled by a low pressure system developing near Hokkaido.

In Sado City on the Sea of Japan coast, winds gusted to nearly 160 kilometers per hour. In eastern Hokkaido, winds of up to 125 kilometers per hour were recorded in Rausu Town.

The Meteorological Agency has issued a warning for strong winds until early Thursday morning in Niigata on the Sea of Japan. In Hokkaido, high winds and snow are forecast on the Sea of Japan coast.

On Tuesday, stormy weather paralyzed transportation systems in Tokyo and surrounding areas.

One man said he left work at around 2:00 PM and, using transportation information on the Internet, arrived home without difficulty.

NHK learned that so far the deadly storm has killed 4 people and left more than 480 injured.
