Damascus has confirmed troop withdrawal from the Syrian cities of Deraa, Idlib and Zabadani, the UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan said on Thursday.

He added that Syrian authorities are also “mapping out a plan to release prisoners,” and that Damascus granted visas to 21 foreign journalists, including those from Russia and the United States.

Thursday also saw a telephone conversation between Annan and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov who discussed the latest events in Syria.

The two men specifically focused on Annan’s six-point peace plan which, in particular, stipulates a ceasefire,  humanitarian assistance to civilians and a political dialogue between all the conflicting parties.

Lavrov, for his part, said that this plan should be implemented by both the authorities and the opposition.
