No tsunami threat after Aceh quake

Twenty eight countries surrounding the Indian Ocean have called off their tsunami alerts, issued this morning following a major undersea earthquake off the Indonesian province of Aceh in northwestern Sumatra.

The initial quake measured 8.9 on the Richter scale and was followed by two dozen strong aftershocks.

There is no word of damage or casualties in the quakes.

Tsunami warnings lifted

The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has lifted its alert for all areas in the Indian Ocean, including Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

The center in Hawaii had issued the alert after a magnitude 8.6 earthquake struck Indonesia on Wednesday, off the northwest coast of Sumatra Island.
