NATO to stay away from Syria conflict
NATO will not interfere in the ongoing conflict in Syria, with Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen saying only that the alliance condemned the government crackdown on civilians and was keeping a close eye on the situation in that country.
Turkish PM Tayiip Recep Erdogan earlier said that Ankara could ask NATO for collective defense against what he called Syrian fire on Turkish territory.
Rasmussen, for his part, said the alliance had not received any official request from Turkey to activate Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, which provides for a collective response to a military aggression by a non-member country or countries. He added that if such a request was made, it would certainly be considered by the NATO leadership.
