Russian Foreign Minister to attend international conference on Syria
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has officially accepted the invitation to participate in an international conference on Syria which is due to be held in Geneva on the 30th of June, Russia’s permanent representative at the UN Vitaly Churkin has reported.
He expressed confidence that the meeting in Geneva “would give an impetus to the efforts to terminate the conflict”.
The idea of convening this forum belongs to Russia which believes that such a meeting could add to the idea of special envoy of the UN and the League of Arab States on the settlement in Syria Kofi Annan about setting up a contact group on Syria.
On the 22nd of June, Annan reported that preparation for the conference has started and called all countries that have an influence on Syria to increase the pressure on the country’s government and opposition. He expressed hope that such a meeting could put an end to violence, start a transitional political process and prevent the conflict from spreading onto neighbouring countries.
