International conference on Syria opens in Geneva
An international conference on Syria has got under way in Geneva.
The Foreign Ministers of the participant countries are taking part.
The meeting is being held behind closed doors, with the results due to be made public at news conferences to be held after the meeting by the UN and Arab League special envoy Kofi Annan, US State Secretary Hillary Clinton and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov later today.
The Foreign Ministers of the world’s leading nations and Arab states are discussing the likely moves that could help settle the intra-Syrian crisis.
The attendees will consider Kofi Annan’s new plan for bringing the situation in Syria back to normal.
The plan provides for a handover of political power to a coalition government, one that should comprise officials of both the current authorities, and the opposition.
