Ban Ki-Moon: UN Mission in Syria to seek political settlement
The UN observer mission in Syria should continue its work, however, it needs to redirect its efforts from achieving a cease-fire, to finding a “political solution”.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon offered these recommendations to the UN Security Council. Currently, there is no unanimity among the Security Council members regarding the mission’s future after its mandate expires on July 20.
The issue will be up for discussion at Wednesday’s meeting. Clashes in Syria have continued for well over a year now. According to UN figures, the total number of victims has exceeded 12,000 people.
