Kofi Annan arrives in Iran

Tuesday, July 10, 2012

The special envoy of the UN and Arab League Kofi Annan arrived in Tehran on Monday where he will hold talks with Iranian leaders regarding a Syrian settlement, according Kofi Annan’s press-secretary Ahmed Fawzi.

The UN special envoy arrived in Iran from Damascus where he had met with President Bashar Assad.

Iran is a close ally of Damascus, but the representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran were not invited to the international meeting on Syria, which was held recently in Geneva, on the 30th of June.

This occurred despite the fact that initially Annan said that Tehran should be involved in any decision regarding Syria.

Iran’s participation in the Geneva conference was also called for by Russia but the U.S. took a tough stance against it.
