France has given the Libyan rebels over $ 250 million from the frozen accounts of Muamar Gaddafi and his entourage, reports Agence France-Press.

In a statement the French Foreign Ministry said that the Transitional National Council, the authority of the Libyan opposition, will be able to spend the money for humanitarian needs.

The ambassador of the rebel government in Paris, Mansour Saif Al-Nasr, confirmed that the money will be used to finance purchases of food and medicine.

Since mid-February there have been mass demonstrations calling for the stepping down of the country’s leader Muamar Gaddafi, who has been ruling the country for more than 40 years.

The demonstrations turned into an armed confrontation between government forces and rebels and have continued un-abated since February.
