PARIS, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) — Irina Bokova, head of UN Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), on Tuesday condemned a NATO strike on Libyan State broadcasting facilities on July 30, saying the operation killing three media workers and wounding dozens of others were “unacceptable”.

“I deplore the NATO strike on Al-Jamahiriya and its installations,” Bokova said in a statement.

“Media outlets should not be targeted in military actions. U.N. Security Council Resolution 1738 (2006) condemns acts of violence against journalists and media personnel in conflict situations,” the UNESCO Director-General said.

“The NATO strike is also contrary to the principles of the Geneva Conventions that establish the civilian status of journalists in times of war even when they engage in propaganda,” Bokova added.

“Fostering independent and pluralistic media is the only way to enable people to form their own opinion,” she underlined.

The air strike on July 30 has killed three employees of the Libyan state television and left 21 people injured, according to UN data.
