New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has said there is information suggesting that terrorists are planning an attack on the city.

In an emergency news conference on Thursday, 3 days before the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks, Bloomberg said the information is uncorroborated but specific and comes from credible sources.

The mayor said he has already heightened security in the city to its maximum level. He called on New Yorkers to remain calm and asked them to promptly report anything suspicious.

Police Chief Raymond Kelly said officers are stepping up their patrols, with a particular focus on public transportation networks, including bridges and tunnels.

A senior official at the US Homeland Security Department told NHK that the government is investigating the threat.

The official added that intelligence obtained from the hideout of slain Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden indicates a possible terror plot timed to coincide with the September 11th anniversary.

US media have reported that 2 or 3 people may have entered the US by air in August with the aim of carrying out a bomb attack on a bridge or tunnel in Washington or New York around the time of the anniversary.

A White House official said President Barack Obama was briefed on the threat on Thursday and that he ordered counterterrorism officials to conduct an investigation and step up security.
