New York is a scene of mourning. A minute of silence, church bell tolls and sirens have marked ten years since the 9/11 terror attacks. The mourners included President Barack Obama and ex-President George W.Bush. The moment was 08.46 EDT, when terrorists slammed a hijacked airliner into the northern tower of New York’s World Trade Center.

Seventeen minutes later, another airliner hit the southern tower. A third one struck the Pentagon. And a fourth one crashed to the ground in Pennsylvania, apparently on its way to destroy the White House or the Capitol Building.

The known 9/11 deaths are close to 3 thousand.

9/11 memorial opens in New York

A memorial ceremony is being held at the site of the World Trade Center in New York on the 10th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks on Sunday.

US President Barack Obama, former President George W Bush and the victims’ relatives are attending the ceremony that started shortly after 8:30 AM.

Hijacked passenger planes crashed into the twin towers one after another, causing them to collapse. A total of 2,977 people died in the attacks carried out on that day.

The ceremony is taking place at a newly built memorial at the site where the World Trade Center once stood.

A minute’s silence was observed at 8:46 AM, the time when the first plane crashed into the building.

Representatives of the victims’ families are reading out the names of all the people who died, including those who were killed in the attacks on the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania.

The ceremony is being held under tight security this year, after a possible terror plot by Al Qaeda came to light.
