War in Libya:Libya’s NTC fighters arrest senior pro-Gaddafi general

TUNIS, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) — Libya’s National Transitional Council (NTC) fighters captured a senior general loyal to leader Muammar Gaddafi on Monday, Tunisia’s official TAP news agency reported on Tuesday, quoting Mohamed Wardougou, an NTC official in charge of the “Desert Shield Brigade.”

General Belgacem Al Abaaj, Gaddafi’s head of intelligence for the Al Khofra region, was allegedly captured between the towns of Sebha and Oum Alaraneb, south of the country, together with his family members, TAP said.

According to the NTC official, the Libyan general had committed several crimes in Al Khofra, including sabotaging petrol wells.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Wardougou said the NTC fighters have taken control of Sebha’s airport and the Fares garrison, and more than 300 Gaddafi mercenaries have fled the town, while many have been killed or captured, he said.
