War in Libya:Sirte, Libya under attack

Troops of the National Transitional Council in Libya are again storming the city of Sirte, the hometown of Muammar Gaddafi.

According to the BBC, an attempt to take the eastern part of the city may be successful as there has been a breech in the defenses of the city.

Both sides are not only firing small arms but also rockets.

Residents are attempting to leave the besieged city which is one of the last bastions of the collapsed regime reported the TASS News Agency.

After six months, Germany has reopened its embassy in the Libyan capital Tripoli.

The announcement came in New York from Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle. He said his country seeks all-round ties with post-Gaddafi Libya.

Mass grave discovered in Tripoli

 

According to Al-Jazeera, revolutionary authorities in Tripoli have discovered the mass grave of some 12 hundred people outside a Gaddafi-era jail.

Papers say that in 1996 alone the regime killed about 2 thousand opposition followers inside this dreaded jailhouse.

At least five people are dead after Libyan rebel forces defending Gadames some 600 kilometres southwest of Tripoli repelled an assault launched by loyalists of Muammar Gaddafi.

According to the National Transitional Council, the attack was led by his son Khamis.

Elsewhere in Libya, rebel forces are keeping up pressure on Bani Walid and Gaddafi’s home city Sirte. These two cities are the last remaining strongholds of the Gaddafi regime.

In Sirte, over 150 local civilians are known to have died in NATO air raids and rebel artillery barrages.
