A ceasefire between the troops of the Libyan National Transitional Council (NTC) and Gaddafi`s army expires in the town of Sirte today, with residents given 48 hours to leave their homes.

Locals say the fighting continues in Sirte, with several civil facilities already damaged by NATO air strikes.

The Red Cross says the humanitarian situation in the city is almost critical, with people suffering an acute food and water shortage. The NTC first pledged to occupy Sirte a month ago.
