TRIPOLI, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) — Fierce battles continued on Wednesday between fighters of Libya’s ruling National Transitional Council (NTC) and remnant forces of fallen Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in the outskirts of Bani Walid, southeast of the capital city of Tripoli, a NTC military source told Xinhua.

The source, asked not to be named, said that pro-Gaddafi soldiers launched missile attacks and mortars on the NTC forces stationed around Bani Walid, some 180 km from Tripoli, resulting in a number of casualties and forcing others to retreat for several kilometers.

The NTC fighters returned fire, but certainly needed more ammunition in response to the strong assaults from Gaddafi loyalists still in control of the town, said the source.

Meanwhile, residents in Bani Walid are continuing the mass exodus due to the deteriorating conditions in the city as well as the indiscriminate fire from pro-Gaddafi snipers.

The source said that the NTC commanders on the ground are waiting for orders to break into the city, after weeks of back-and- forth battles in the town in which Gaddafi’s second son Seif al- Islam is believed to be holed up.

NTC military spokesman Ahmed Bani said in Tripoli on Wednesday that the NTC has succeeded in taking the geographical challenges in their favor in Bani Walid, which was described as “between mountains.”

Bani said that there are “future preparations” for the town, but failed to elaborate.
