COPENHAGEN, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) — At lease one person was killed in a series of explosions which rocked a former civil defense barracks in the town of Store Andst, southern Denmark, on Saturday, local police said.

Fire brigade and ambulance services are already on the site of the accident. Emergency services said thick clouds of poisonous smoke were billowing from the site and requested residents in the area to stay indoors.

According to Danish public broadcaster DR News, the explosions occurred at around 10:45 a.m. local time (0845 GMT). Emergency response services in the nearby Kolding city said the explosion may have originated from ammunitions on the site.

Meanwhile, a journalist for the local Jyske Vestkysten newspaper said a fireworks cache in the building could have been the source, but could not confirm it.

Eyewitnesses told Danish news agency Ritzaw that they saw blown-out gables on the barracks building, several shattered windows and an overturned car in the aftermath of the explosion.

The civil defense barracks were sold to private investors several years ago, and are now privately owned, TV2 added.
